Medical school is a four-year educational journey with the first two years primarily consisting of classroom- and lab-based instruction while the final two years are more focused on clinical training through rotations at hospitals or clinics learning from physicians in their practice.

Sometimes called a “residency” or “fellowship,” graduate medical education is a period of additional training after medical school when a physician will learn more about a particular medical specialty.  It can last anywhere from three years to seven years, depending upon how specialized the field of medicine is.
