FY 2019 budget boosts medical education funding

On May 2, Gov. Nathan Deal signed House Bill 684, which includes appropriations for the Georgia Board for Physician Workforce's programming. Budget highlights for the GBPW include:
 

  • $1,732,569 - Increase funds for 99 new residency slots in primary care medicine
  • $750,000 - Provide funds for new fellowship positions at Augusta University in the following areas: vision (retinal and glaucoma), cancer, neurology (Alzheimer's disease and stroke/vascular) and aging
  • $130,000 - Provide funds for malpractice insurance premium assistance for physicians with a practice in underserved counties that currently have one or less physicians
  • $200,000 - Increase funds for the start-up of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine South Georgia campus and develop a long-term plan for expansion in Georgia
